Beats And Instrumentals: The Truth About Making It In The Music Industry

Many people have a desire to make a record and get signed by a major record label, but the question is,  do you really understand what you are getting your self into?  Music is free, it is vocals, beats and instrumentals, but with business it can get very technical. From my experience, there advantages and major disadvantages when signing with a major label.

Some of the advantages are:

1) World Wide Promotion- When you sign with a major label, most of times your project is promoted in and out of the country which would of course help generate more sales. It can be hard to do this type of promoting under an independent label because of the expense.

2) Bonuses and Perks- If you are a hot artist, major labels will give nice bonuses and perks while you are in the process of completing your project. There is also a down side to this that I will explain later. Also, you will have access to work with different artists under the same label if the terms are on point.

On the flip side, here are some disadvantages:

1) Bonuses are loans-  Most of the times when a major label give out bonuses to a new sign artist, it is only a loan to complete your project. The money is deducted out of your sales, and if your album don't live up to standards and pay off then that leaves you in debit. Signing Bonuses are enticing to new comers, but at the end it can destroy careers.

2) Your music is not YOUR music- When ever you do a record with a major label especially being a new artist, your music belongs to that record label and most times you will never get the masters of your own work. You can read about many horrible stories where new artist on labels such as " Bad Boy", Inter scope, etc have trouble getting royalties.

The main thing I'm trying to say in this article is going independent is more profitable unless you turn out to be an artist like Rihanna or Kanye West. Unless you can sell millions of copies, then you will most likely be in debit with the major label you sign under. Being an independent artist can take longer to get recognized, but think of it like this, if you hustle and sell 5,000 copies at 8 dollars, you make close to 40,000, and with the internet, this is very possible and a lot of people are even doing higher numbers than that.
